I keep messing up my knitting…
I am currently in the process of knitting the Lana Vest by Irene Lin. I’ve had this on my list for about a year, and I absolutely fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I visited KNITT Totnes on their opening day last year, and I was so excited to see some Nordic yarns that I hadn’t seen in physical yarn shops before, so I bought myself some Rauma Garn Vams to make this vest with (in the colour Camel). It’s such a lovely warm yarn, 2 ply and 100% Nordic wool. I’ve never used any Rauma before so I jumped at the opportunity!
I think it must have been the oppressive heat this summer that had me extremely excited for some autumnal weather, and I cast on this on 1 September. The cables are glorious, and in aran yarn it’s working up beautifully quickly. But it would be a lot quicker if I could stop messing up my cable directions!!!!!
The first time I spotted that I’d suddenly just decided to start twisting the cable the wrong way was on the back panel, and of course by the time I noticed it, I was about 20 rows past the point of making the mistake. Clearly once I’d done the one twist wrong, I used that as a reference point for all the ones after that! I’m usually one to try every possible option before I pull back the whole thing, so I just took the cable stitches down to the point of the mistake, and performed some surgery on it to re-twist it the right way. I was really proud of how it turned out so I posted the results to Threads, and had an overwhelming response – everyone was so lovely and complimentary of my repair job!
A lot of the responses seemed impressed that this could be done at all, so I considered filming a tutorial to show how I fix cable mistakes. Lucky for me, I’ve now just randomly mis-twisted cables four separate times in this one project, so today I decided to make the most of it and I filmed the tutorial of me repairing one of the mistakes. It’s now up on my YouTube channel for anyone else interested in fixing a cable without either cutting the work or ripping back rows of work!
I’ve been cabling for years, though I couldn’t blame anyone for thinking this was my first rodeo. Maybe I just need to stop trying to do other things at the same time as knitting cables…
The video tutorial is live on YouTube – find it here!
